Type O blood: A high-protein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish and vegetables, and light on grains, beans and dairy.

Type A blood: A meat-free diet rich in fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, and whole grains—ideally, organic and fresh.

Type B blood: Foods to focus on are green vegetables, eggs, certain meats and low-fat dairy. Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds.

Type AB blood: Foods to focus on include tofu, seafood, dairy and green vegetables. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoked or cured meats.

OBI recommends a well-balanced diet for all donors. For tips on "How to feel good when giving blood", click here.

Exercising for your blood type*:

Type O blood: You tend to be strong and athletic—with powerful arms and legs—and, because you're no longer chasing your meals, crave high-intensity workouts like interval training, running, and plyometrics. You use exercise as an emotional outlet, and need it more than other blood types to fight stress and anxiety and boost your mood.

Type A blood: Intense exercise increases your levels of the stress hormone cortisol and leads to muscle fatigue and stiffness. You do best by opting for calming activities that help you focus and protect your joints, like Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi and isometric exercises.

Type B blood: You'll enjoy group cardio workouts that are slightly lower impact, like tennis or cycling, as well as resistance training.

Type AB blood: You tend to get muscle and joint stiffness from high-power cardio sessions, so you'll be more apt to stick with gentle exercise, like walking, hiking, golf or dance. However, you also tend to internalize anger, so yoga and Tai Chi can be helpful for keeping your mood level and your muscles and joints limber.

Personality by blood type*:

The Japanese believe blood types impact specific personality traits, similar to the way some believe astrological signs indicate behaviors. This is similar to someone's belief that your astrological sign can tell your personality.  Some Japanese video game makers assign blood types to characters in games, so players can pick characters not only based on skills but also on personalities. For instance, if an aggressive competitor is needed, pick a character with Type O blood. But be careful, that character may also be arrogant and may not think before acting.
